Home Remedies to Clean Water Stains From Windows

Water stains on your windows can make them look dingy and unclean, block out light and mar even the most beautiful view. Water that leaves a stain behind is called hard water, because it contains minerals such as magnesium, iron, lime and calcium that are often difficult to get rid of. You can prepare home remedies to remove unsightly water stains and help keep your windows clean and clear. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. White Vinegar

    • Combine white vinegar and water. The acid in the vinegar helps break down the minerals in the water that formed the stains. Mix 50 percent water with 50 percent white vinegar. Soak a clean towel in the mixture and wipe it over the water marks on your windows. Press the towel onto the window for a few minutes, allowing the vinegar and water solution to saturate the water stains. Repeat until the water stains are removed. Use vinegar without water if you have water stains that are difficult to remove. You can also apply the mixture with a spray bottle.

    Corn Starch

    • Corn starch is a powerful natural cleaner. Add 1/2 cup of cornstarch to 2 quarts of warm water. Dip a sponge or clean cloth into the mixture and wipe it over the water stains. Allow the corn-starch-and-water solution to thoroughly dry. Use another wet cloth or sponge to wipe off the corn starch residue, and the water stains should be gone.

    Rubbing Alcohol

    • Rubbing alcohol often works to dissolve mild water stains from windows. Mix 1 part rubbing alcohol with 1 part water in a bowl. Dip a clean sponge into the solution and wipe it over the water stains. Once the stains are removed, rinse the windows clean with water.

    Lemon Juice

    • Lemon juice works in the same way as white vinegar to dissolve window water stains. Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto a clean towel and wipe it over the water stains. Repeat until all the water stains are removed.

    Baking Soda

    • Baking soda is a cleaning agent. Mix it with enough water to form a paste. Dip a clean sponge into the baking soda solution and rub it over the water stains. Rinse the windows with clean water. Repeat until all the water stains are eliminated.

    Toothpaste

    • Toothpaste is an effective stain remover that works well on water spots. Squeeze 1 teaspoon of toothpaste onto a paper towel, add a little water, then gently rub the mixture onto the water stains. Use a clean, wet sponge to thoroughly rinse the window glass. You can also use a squeegee to remove any excess water and toothpaste. The water stains should be gone. Repeat if necessary.
