Health Informatics Programs in Canada

Health informatics is the use of information technology to enable the storage, usage and processing of health information. Health informatics is used in research, health policy development and health services delivery to improve the way health care services are handled. Health informatics programs are available at several schools in Canada to help prepare students for entry into this field, including the three listed below.

  1. Dalhousie University

    • Dalhousie University offers a Master of Health Informatics program designed to provide students with a conceptual understanding of health care systems and health in general. This program is designed to be completed in two years on a full-time schedule. Students will complete courses such as Introduction to Health Informatics, Health Information Flow and Standards, Data Mining for Health Informatics, Health Information Systems and Issues, Statistics for Health Informatics and Fundamentals of Clinical Care for Non-Clinicians.

    George Brown College

    • George Brown College offers an intensive three-semester post-graduate health informatics program that begins in January of each year. Students attend classes three days a week and have the option of taking some courses online. The schedule enables them to work while completing the program. Courses are held one evening during the week and on Fridays and Saturdays. Students take courses such as Healthcare Information Technology, Project Management and Implementation, Online Educational Strategies, Leadership and Change Movement, The Canadian Healthcare System, and Health Informatics System Analysis and Evaluation.

    • The University of Toronto offers a health informatics professional degree program designed to prepare students to become health informaticians. The program is designed to be completed in 16 months on a full-time schedule; this includes a four-month professional practicum. Students will take courses such as Introduction to Information and Communication Technology in Healthcare; Information Systems, Services and Designs, Analyzing Information Systems, Quantitative Skills in Health Informatics, Knowledge Management and Systems and Human Factors and Change Management in Health Services.
