Free Children's Church Activities
Children's church activities don't have to be expensive. Organizing free activities is possible with imagination and preparation. Teaming donated items with the supplies and resources already available allows you to plan several free activities, such as an instrument craft, a Bible Bowl and a scavenger hunt. Does this Spark an idea?

Musical Instruments
-
Children can make a guitar. Asking church members to donate used containers allows you to create a variety of instruments inexpensively. Children can create guitars with donated paper towel tubes, shoe boxes, and rubber bands. To make the guitar, cut a hole in the side of the shoe box large enough to slide about 1.5 inches of the paper towel roll into it. Then have the children make three cuts in the small portion of the tube inside the box, folding those pieces backward and taping them to the inside. Next, children can cut out a hand-sized oval shape in the shoebox lid top. Have them place the lid on the box and stretch about four rubber bands of different widths lengthwise across the box over the oval to give the guitar various tones. Also, used plastic water bottles and buttons can be made into maracas or children can use oatmeal containers to make drums.
Genesis Bible Bowl
-
A Bible Bowl is easy to organize. Organizing a Bible Bowl gives children a chance to show what they know about the book of Genesis. Hand out a prepared study sheet for older children and allow them several weeks to study before the competition. Preparing younger children can be as simple as reading aloud Genesis stories, staging puppet shows, or performing Genesis skits for several weeks. Form teams or permit children to compete individually in answering questions about the book of Genesis. You'll need one moderator, three judges, and bells/buzzers that allow children to announce their answers.

Bible Scavenger Hunt
-
Children can search for clues around the church. A scavenger hunt based on Jesus' life is a free, fun activity for children. Using pens and markers, write or draw clues on scrap paper and hide them throughout the church. Children work in teams to find clues. Start the scavenger hunt by giving each team a first clue, such as "Jesus' crib." Once the children find your drawing or printed photo of a manger, the next clue will be waiting for them. Determine in advance the number of clues you wish to create.
