Signs of Music Giftedness

Musically gifted people have similar traits

How can someone display talent exceeding those who have studied music for years? Is there a genetic reason why some individuals can play complicated pieces of music by ear? A genetic connection has never been found, but there are obvious characteristics that point to an innate gift of music that few will ever realize.

  1. Joy

    • One of the signs is in the face. A joy, a happiness radiating whenever the individual is playing or listening to music. It's quite obvious she is extremely happy and involved in the music, closing her eyes and smiling when immersed in music. She loves music, one of the necessary traits of the accomplished musician.

    Innate Understanding

    • The gifted individual may exhibit comprehension of relationships between chords and notes, understanding that the complex arrangement of notes is not random. Country music and blues, for example, is most often a circle of three chords that most ordinary individuals can comprehend with a bit of guidance. Few gifted individuals stay within these bounds. Gifted individuals reach for complex theory and chord arrangements that do not lie within the bounds of three chords. However, that is not to say that blues, or country improvisations cannot be gifted. The individual can start in a three-chord pattern but will expound and improvise inside the box of three, never satisfied to stay within a simple pattern. A gifted person can readily recognize music that is off-key and has a remarkable memory to reproduce or imitate songs. The individual will also display a talent for writing original music, or in smaller children, singing and making up songs.

    Natural Rhythm

    • One of the mechanical indications that a child or individual has the gift is a natural sense of rhythm that is exhibited anytime music is being played: a tapping or drumming of fingers, a nodding or swaying of the head, an appreciation for dance and dramatic activities with musical elements and an almost undeniable compulsion to move to the music. The gifted will also display an uncanny ability for coordination in the fingers, particularly when instruments and scales are introduced, applying a speed and natural affluence of performance that is above average.
