Wood Block Crafts
Wooden blocks can be purchased pre-cut or you can make your own. Either way, they aren't generally expensive, so many people incorporate wood blocks into craft projects. Go beyond creating a simple set of blocks for a child's room and use wood blocks as a useful base for craft projects for grown ups.

Handmade Wooden Blocks
-
These custom-made wooden blocks can be done in any theme you desire. For one block, you'll need to sand it and then paint it with acrylic paint in any color you choose, then let it dry. To add decorative paper to each side, cut six pieces to 3 1/4 square inches. Use decoupage as an adhesive and glue the squares of paper to each side of the block. When that glue dries, sand the edges and corners of the paper, then paste letters, numbers and any other embellishments to the paper using the decoupage. For added texture or an antique look, you can sponge some acrylic paint to the edges of the paper. Cover the entire block with another coat of your decoupage glue and allow to dry. Repeat this process for each block.
Block Snowman
-
This little guy will make a nice handmade Christmas gift for someone. You'll use two blocks, one larger (about 3 1/4 inch) and one smaller than that (about 2 1/2 inches). Paint the larger block white and the smaller one black, using acrylic paint. For a hat, cut a 1/16-inch piece of wood into a 3-by-3-inch square, then glue that to the bottom of your black block to serve as a hat, then glue the hat to the white block. Cut a small triangular nose out of wood, paint it with orange acrylic paint, then glue it onto the snowman's face. Alternatively, you could use orange craft foam. Use black scrapbooking buttons for eyes because they're tiny enough to be proportionate, and hot glue them above the nose. Dab on pink acrylic paint with a cotton ball for a "blushed" look on your snowman's cheeks, then draw on his eyebrows and mouth with a black permanent marker. You can embellish him by adding a wired-edge, Christmas-themed ribbon around his neck for a scarf and holly berries for his hat.

Fun Foam Stamps
-
This is an inexpensive way to obtain custom-designed stamps. For this project, you can either buy pre-cut foam shapes (makes it easier if you're going for a certain theme), or create your own designs. Put craft glue on the backside of your foam shapes, then turn it over and place on the wooden block. You'll want to use a block whose surface isn't much bigger than the shape; otherwise, it may be harder to get your design stamped properly. Create designs to coordinate any theme you wish, and use your stamps to decorate paper or make homemade gift wrap.
