Record Album Crafts

Don't discard those old vinyl record albums, recycle them into funky, vintage craft projects. The decorative album covers make distinctive personal style statements. The vinyl albums may be shaped into a variety of household containers or display items. Open your imagination and figure out a way to continue enjoying the record albums your parents or grandparents loved.

Record Album Tote

  • Create a vintage tote from a recycled record album cover. Cut the front of the album cover from the back by slicing open the three closed sides. Laminate the front and the back with heavy laminate sheets to strengthen and to protect the cover. Leave a 1/4-inch laminated border around the front and the back to make joining the pieces easier. Cut the sides and bottom of the tote from card stock to fit the desired depth of the tote. Laminate the cut strips of card stock; again leave a 1/4-inch laminate border. Attach the side and bottom strips of the laminated card stock to the front and back panels of the record album with silk or plastic cord. You'll need to punch matching holes along the 1/4-inch laminate edges of each section so you can thread the cord through the adjoining pieces. Make a beaded handle for the tote with 22-gauge craft wire covered with 4 mm or 6 mm glass beads. Thread the ends of the wire through grommeted holes along the top of the front and back of the album cover.

Record Bowl

  • Melt an old vinyl record into a bowl that you can use to display potpourri, serve chips or store fruit. This is one recycling craft that releases fumes as the vinyl melts, so make sure to do it outdoors or open a few windows before beginning the project. Place a large oven-proof bowl upside down in the center of a cookie sheet lined with tin foil. Center the vinyl record album on top of the bowl and place the cookie sheet in an oven that's pre-heated to 150 degrees. Heat the record album between 5 and 10 minutes, until the record starts to melt and bend. Carefully remove the album from the oven while wearing oven mitts. Shape the softened album around the bowl to better from a concave center. The sides melt in wave shapes, but you can also manipulate them to a desired shape as long as the vinyl is soft.

Picture Frame

  • Softened record albums also make interesting frames for your wall. Follow the steps to melt the record album in a 150 degree oven. Rather than shape the softened album into a bowl, leave the center flat and let the perimeter become wavy. When the album cools, spray-paint it to coordinate with your room's décor. Decoupage a photo into the center of the album to transform it into a picture frame. You can place anything that will fit in the center of the album before hanging it on the wall.
