Although they may be known as "gentle giants," Great Danes can be quite territorial.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) provides a list of 26 dogs that belong in the "working group" of dog breeds. These dogs were bred to protect property, pull sleds and rescue victims, and all of them possess intense loyalty and territorial qualities. Most are large dogs, and although they make excellent companions, many of the breeds require specially disciplined training to perform to their fullest capacities. Other territorial dog breeds include the Giant Schnauzer, Anatolian Shepherd and Akita.

The Mastiff was depicted by Egyptians as early as 3000 B.C. They are very strong and protective, and have been used as watchdogs for 2,000 years. The Mastiff can be up to 32 inches in height and usually weighs between 150 and 200 lbs. To avoid behavioral problems, Mastiff owners must be sure to socialize their dogs regularly and consistently. Variations such as the Tibetan Mastiff, Bullmastiff and Neopolitan Mastiff are also known for their territorial qualities.
