What Cars Get the Best Gas Mileage in Europe?
Europe is going through a serious love affair with the fuel-efficient diesel hatchback in sizes to suit any need. Because most of these diesel hatchbacks get excellent fuel economy, very few people in Europe drive similarly sized, gas-guzzling SUVs.

Peugeot 207 Economique
-
This very recent addition to the popular range of 207 hatchbacks is by far the most fuel efficient variant, getting 74.3 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. It also only emits 99g/km of carbon dioxide emissions. This is accomplished by lengthening gear ratios, installing low-rolling resistance tires, maximizing air flow around the car using undertrays and spoilers and having a shift indicator that tells when to upshift to maximize your miles per gallon.
Ford Focus Econetic
-
The new for 2010 Ford Focus Econetic comes equipped with a 90-horsepower, 1.6-liter Dci turbodiesel engine. Thanks to a host of revisions, including engine and transmission tuning, this family hatchback gets a combined 74.2 miles per gallon. The Econetic emits only 99g/km of carbon dioxide, making it sensible to drive this car in many of Europe's city centers that levy hefty surcharges on cars that pollute more.

VW Polo BlueMotion
-
The VW Polo (a compact hatch slightly smaller than a Golf) is new for 2010, and is powered by 1.2-liter, three-cylinder turbo diesel. It gets 71 miles per gallon on the combined fuel economy cycle. Volkswagen plans to introduce the Polo in the United States in 2012.
