Fun Ways to Celebrate Co-worker Birthdays

Nothing builds morale like an office birthday party. Celebrating co-workers' birthdays is important because it shows colleagues that they are valuable as people and not simply as employees. If you do decide to throw a birthday party for a colleague, there are a variety of issues that you will need to address such as invitations, menu, attire and location. Wherever and however you choose to celebrate a colleague's birthday, a carefully planned birthday party will go a long way toward putting a smile on your co-workers' faces.

Surprise Party

  • A surprise party at work will likely be unexpected and exciting for the birthday girl. She may suspect a surprise party from friends and family, but it is unlikely she will suspect it from co-workers. The element of surprise is best preserved by holding the birthday party upon the birthday girl's arrival to work, but the surprise party could also be held during a lunch break or even at the end of the work day. Regardless of when the surprise occurs, be sure to take the time to pass around cards and even have a dessert such as cake or cookies. Also, make sure that all other employees are aware of how and when you will surprise the birthday girl.

Bowling Party

  • A bowling party is a sure way to create many laughs and even inspire some friendly competition among co-workers outside the workplace. While it requires great skill to perfect, bowling takes little skill to enjoy. One advantage of having a bowling party is that many bowling alleys have special accommodations and packages that can they can tailor to the specific needs of your party. Also, some bowling alleys feature private rooms, reserved lanes and food and drink specials for private parties.

Theme Party

  • Theme parties are great ways to spice up the workplace. The possibility of themes is virtually endless. You can have a theme birthday party using a favorite genre of television shows or movies, for instance. You can even have a decade party such as an 80s day or disco birthday party. Whatever theme you choose, make sure that the other colleagues are aware of the date of the theme party in addition to any office guidelines or recommendations for the theme party.

Picnic Party

  • One of the main advantages of a birthday picnic for a co-worker is that you will typically have it on an off day, so colleagues can bring their families to the picnic. While you can hold the picnic on a work day, it is best to have it on an off day because co-workers can bring their own side dishes, and other co-workers can devote time to grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, for example. If the birthday is an extra-special occasion, you can even hire a band to liven up the festivities. One advantage of a picnic is that many businesses have the space to host the picnic in the parking lot or even on grassy areas on the grounds of the business.
