Redirect malware, also known as Internet redirect viruses, scareware and browser hijackers, are a form of Internet fraud. Redirect malware can cause a host of problems on your computer and thus should be removed and prevented from infecting your computer in the future.

The main symptom of redirect malware is that all of your Internet searches are redirected to random websites. Often, these websites advertise rogue anti-virus programs. In addition, redirect malware may change your Internet homepage, add toolbars and "favorites" to your web browser and flood your computer with pop-up advertisements. Finally, redirect malware generally slows your computer and may even cause your web browser to freeze or shut down.

Common redirect malware includes SafeSearch, CoolWebSearch and Tazinga. The degree of harm varies from malware to malware. For example, some redirect malware merely redirects your Internet searches for the purpose of obtaining false traffic statistics. Other redirect malware is capable of stealing your personal information, including online banking passwords and e-mail passwords.

Most redirect malware can be removed by running an up to date anti-malware program. If you do not have an anti-malware program and need to download one, you will need to load the Windows operating system in "Safe Mode with Networking" in order to temporary disable the malware redirect. To do this, restart your computer and press "F8" repeatedly while it is booting. The "Windows Advanced Options Menu" appears. Highlight "Safe Mode with Networking" using your keyboard and press "Enter." The Windows operating system loads in Safe Mode with Networking, allowing you to use your web browser to download one of several free anti-malware programs. These programs include Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast! Free Antivirus 6 and Malwarebytes.

Preventing redirect malware requires technology and common sense. In terms of technology, be sure to keep an up to date anti-malware program on your computer that features real-time protection. Real-time protection is a feature, included with most anti-malware programs, that scans incoming data and blocks malicious data from infecting your computer. In addition, turn on your Windows firewall and keep your operating system up to date. As for common sense, avoid clicking on suspicious pop-up advertisements and downloading freeware from un-trusted sources.
