Ways to Motivate Employees to Build Skill Sets
Motivating employees to take charge of their own success requires input and assistance from management and human resources. Any employee who may be interested in building his skill set for future promotions or projects will need to understand how to obtain training and what the benefits can be. Understanding ways to motivate employees to build skill sets is part of creating a proactive staff.

Planning
-
Part of motivating employees to build the skill sets necessary to move up in the company or develop their professional careers is explaining to the employees what training they need and how to obtain it. Managers use the annual appraisal to work directly with employees on developing plans that will help the employees reach their professional goals. The motivation is the desire to succeed and develop work-related skills. The manager creates the motivation by developing a path that the employee can follow.
Monitoring
-
It is not enough for a manager to help an employee create a career development plan. The manager also needs to monitor the employee's progress and offer assistance when needed. Motivation can be tested when an employee feels she does not understand the plan, or wonders if she is completing the steps she needs to achieve her goals. Managerial guidance will help maintain the employee motivation needed to learn new skill sets and help the employee stay focused on her goal.

Teamwork
-
While managers play a significant role in motivating employees to take on new skill sets, employees can motivate each other, especially if groups of them aspire to learn the same skill sets. Companies should create groups of employees with similar interests and get them involved in the same training programs. Managers should encourage these groups to work together to help each other reach their goals and obtain new skill sets. In some cases, the employee group dynamic can be as motivating as any assistance a manager can offer.
Integration
-
When employees get involved in learning new skill sets, a manager can motivate the employees by integrating what the employees are learning into job tasks. Developing special projects will benefit the company while allowing employees to utilize the information they learn in training to complete real work tasks. When employees can see their training at work in daily activities, it inspires them to learn more so they can apply more knowledge to their jobs.
