Homemade Family Reunion Crafts

Family reunions are an opportunity for family members to come together and get to know each other better and celebrate the strength of the family tree. Some of the common activities for these events are games, contests and arts and crafts projects. These activities are useful for not only providing entertainment at the event, but for also acting as bonding experiences for the loved ones that attend these events. Some crafts can even be saved as keepsakes to memorialize the event.

Family Tree

  • A family tree is a perfect decorative item for family reunions. This can be made in a number of different ways. One way is to draw the trunk of a tree on poster board. Add paper branches to label the family members that can be used for reference or simply display at the big event. Another option, based off one described on the Enchanted Learning website, is to take an actual tree with very few leaves. Put names of each family member on individual pieces of green paper to look like leaves. Punch a hole in each leaf and thread them with loops of yarn. Attach the leaves to individual branches. The leaves from this display can also be used as place cards for seating arrangements by putting the assigned seat on the backside of the leaf.

  • Get family members involved with the reunion by creating decorative pieces to furnish the space. For example, one craft project could be a banner or bunting flag. Paint a large piece of butcher paper to make a family banner, or create a garland-style reunion banner by stringing pieces of paper using yarn or twine. To create a bunting flag, cut triangle shapes out of paper or fabric and thread them on a strip of yarn. Decorate your banners with paint, sequins, glitter and other decorative details. Along with banners, family members might enjoy making candles for centerpieces of decorative lighting displays at the party.

  • Pinatas are not only decoration for family reunions, they are a favorite activity. To create a pinata, blow up a balloon and tie it closed. Use this balloon as your base, adding construction paper or cardboard around the balloon to create your desired shape. Cover the base with layers of newspaper and paper mache paste. After all the layers are dry, paint and cover the pinata with crepe paper as desired. Cut a hole in the back of the pinata to fill with candy and toys, or perhaps add photos of family members to the mix. Suspend the pinata at the reunion and take turns trying to break it apart to enjoy the contents.

  • Some craft projects can be done at the family reunion for guests to take home with them. One very common reunion keepsake is T-shirts. To customize T-shirts, give each family member a T-shirt in her size. Each person can decorate the shirt according to her liking. For example, tie rubber bands around random patches of the shirt and dip it in various color fabric dyes to create a tie-dye effect. You can also hand paint the T-shirts with family names and slogans using fabric markers or puffy paint. Iron-on patches and printed transfers can also be used to decorate T-shirts.
