Ideas for a Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt

The Thanksgiving holiday is associated with family, food, football and holiday shopping. However, the holiday does not have the same child-friendly appeal as Christmas' Santa Claus or Halloween's costumed candy-seeking. Parents can make Thanksgiving more appealing for children by holding an annual Thanksgiving scavenger hunt and awarding prizes.

Food Related Scavenger Hunt

  • For little children, an easy scavenger hunt can take place at the grocery store when shopping for Thanksgiving dinner food items. Make holiday food shopping an adventure for your toddler by asking him to assist you in locating cranberry sauce, turkeys and pumpkins. You can also have your young child assist in hunting for ingredients in your kitchen as you prepare your Thanksgiving meal.

Outdoor Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt

  • You can hold a scavenger hunt outdoors for older children, with search items related to the fall harvest as well as to Thanksgiving itself. Ask children to search for a cob of Indian corn, a miniature pumpkin, an apple, a group of people playing football and a newspaper advertising Black Friday sales. You can award extra points to a child who can find a neighbor or relative who has traveled over a river and through woods to arrive for the Thanksgiving meal.

Online Scavenger Hunt

  • Children who are inside on a rainy Thanksgiving Day can play an online scavenger hunt using the Internet to search for holiday-related clues. This hunt can include clues pertaining to the first Thanksgiving, Native American history and culture as well as nutritional information about turkey.

Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt Prizes

  • Reward children who participate in the scavenger hunt with Thanksgiving-related prizes such as candy apples, plush turkey dolls or a football. You can also hide these prizes around your home or yard and list them as items for the children to locate and keep as mementos of their Thanksgiving game. Since Black Friday is just a day away, you might award a child with the grand prize of a gift certificate to her favorite toy store.
