An electrical lineman installs and maintains the network of power lines so people can have electricity in their homes and businesses. Because a large number of these workers are nearing retirement age, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates very good job opportunities in this occupation, even though job growth will be slow. Electrical lineman salaries in Texas vary widely with location.

Employment

Of the approximately 105,540 electrical linemen working in the United States in 2010, about 9,110 were employed in Texas, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state ranked first in the country for the number of electrical linemen. The largest number in the state worked in the greater Houston area, with an estimated 2,360 linemen in 2010. Victoria had the third-largest number of electrical lineman per capita by metro area in the country. With about 220 of these workers, nearly five of every 1,000 workers in Victoria was an electrical lineman. The only cities with a larger concentration of linemen were Sumter, South Carolina and Pascagoula, Mississippi.

Salary Range

Electrical linemen in Texas had an average salary of $22.46 per hour as of May 2010, or $46,720 per year, according to the bureau. The middle 50 percent were making $16.52 to $28.64 per hour, or $34,360 to $59,570 per year. The bottom 10 percent had wages of $11.43 per hour and less, and the top 10 percent were earning $33.14 per hour and higher, or $68,940 per year and more.

High-Paying Areas

Texas electrical linemen earned the highest average salary in 2010 in Lubbock, at $28.89 per hour, or $60,090 per year. Other areas with relatively high average pay for these workers were Corpus Christi at $26.38 per hour, Beaumont-Port Arthur at $24.74, El Paso at $24.71, the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood area at $24.70, Abilene at $24.33, the central Texas nonmetropolitan area at $24.30 and the greater Houston area at $24.17.

Other Regions

The lowest average salary for Texas electrical linemen was in Waco, at $17.87 per hour, or $37,170 per year. Salaries also were relatively low in San Antonio, Victoria, the greater Dallas-Forth Worth area and the southern Texas nonmetropolitan area, ranging from about $19 to $19.70. The average electrical lineman salary in other parts of Texas ranged from about $20.70 to $23.70 per hour.
