Caterpillar 257B Specs

Save

The Caterpillar 257B is a multi-terrain tracked bucket loader capable of lifting and moving up to 2,300 lbs. of material at once. This U.S.-made diesel-powered machine was introduced in 2004 and is still in production. It uses rubber tracks to maximize traction while minimizing ground pressure, and features a tilt-up cab and tilt-away radiator for easy routine service access. Buyers have a wide choice of buckets and other work tools.

Engine

  • The Cat 257B loader is powered by a Caterpillar-designed four-cylinder, turbocharged, direct-injection diesel engine rated at 62 horsepower. This cast-iron, liquid-cooled engine uses glow-plug starting, has a 3.3 inch bore, 3.9 inch stroke and displaces 134 cubic inches. Its cooling system takes 2.6 gallons of antifreeze/coolant and its crankcase holds 1.8 gallons of oil. Fuel tank capacity is 20 gallons. This is a low-emission engine, compliant with federal EPA Tier 2 standards.

Drive Train

  • The 257B loader features a hydrostatic, infinitely variable transmission and hydraulic drive train. The dual closed-loop pumps that pressurize the hydraulic system are driven directly off the engine. The pumps provide the pressure and flow for the hydrostatic transmission and a pair of fixed-displacement hydraulic motors that power the elevated drive sprockets. No chains are used in this drive train.

Tracks & Lift

  • The sprockets drive two 15-inch-wide nylon-reinforced rubber tracks that put 59 inches of track on the ground and provide 1,775 square inches of ground contact area for a ground pressure of 4.3 psi. It has hydraulic multi-disk steering brakes for each track. Top speed for the 257B loader is 7.5 mph in forward or reverse. The engine's hydraulic pumps also power the hydraulic lifting system. Two hydraulic cylinders provide lift and two more control bucket tilt. The pumps maintain a pressure of 3,335 psi throughout the system, which takes 23.7 gallons of fluid.

Dimensions & Options

  • The 257B loader is 8 feet 10 inches long without bucket. The bucket adds another 2 feet 6 inches to the length. It stands 6 feet 8 inches tall from ground to top of the roll cage and is 5 feet 6 inches wide. It has a 10-inch ground clearance between the tracks. It can lift its bucket 9 feet 10 inches into the air. It has a 31-inch reach at maximum height and a 55-inch reach when the lift arms are parallel to the ground. Work tools for the 257B include five different types of buckets, a trencher, stump grinder, wheel saw, vibratory compactor, pallet fork, power broom, asphalt planer, landscape tiller and snowblower. Options include security locks, a fully enclosed operator cab with heat and air conditioning, four-point lifting eyes, a work-light package and auxiliary quick-connect hydraulics for certain work tools.
