Neon Cake Ideas

The term "neon" refers to extremely bright colors. When you think of neon, you probably think of one of several things, such as a neon sign or the colors of the 1980s. Regardless of what comes to mind, knowing a few cake ideas helps you design a cake with a neon theme.

Neon Signs

  • Neon gas is pumped into glass tubes to create the glowing effects of a neon sign. Recreate this look using cake and colored frosting or fondant. Start by covering the cake in black fondant or frosting. Then pipe the design of the cake on, using neon colored frosting. Alternatively, roll fondant between your hands to create long snake-like pieces. Then, use the pieces to create the sign on the cake. Replicate the recipient's favorite restaurant sign or create your own design.

1980s

  • Another idea is to design the cake with the 1980s in mind. Use bright colors to create clothing or other accessories from the era, such as sunglasses or jelly shoes. Either pipe the decoration on the cake with neon frosting in a piping bag or cut 2-D shapes out of neon colored, rolled fondant, using bright pinks, yellows and greens. Other 1980s items to include are the Rubik's cube, cassette tapes or an Atari. Make these items out of gum paste and place them on top of a cake covered in neon colored frosting or fondant.

Highlighters

  • Another popular neon toned color is the highlighter. Create your cake with a highlighter theme to celebrate administrative assistant's day. One idea is to carve a cake into the shape of a pack of highlighters. Use rolled fondant to create the different colored highlighters, including pink, yellow, green, orange and blue. Another idea is to use frosting to pipe a picture of highlighters onto a solid-colored cake. A third option is to make highlighters out of brightly colored gum paste. Then place the gum paste highlighters onto a cake or on top of cupcakes. Alternatively, use an airbrush with edible paints to add the neon color to your cake.

Neon Tetra

  • Neon tetras are small fish that seems to glow with neon colors. Use the tetra's shape to inspire your neon cake. Use a serrated knife to cut out a tetra shape from a sheet cake using an image of the fish as a reference. (If you are not comfortable carving the cake freehand, cut out a template from poster board and cut around it to make the tetra shape. Then cover the cake in fondant or frosting in bright, neon colors.
