A bottom freezer is located underneath the refrigerator portion of a refrigerator-freezer appliance. When shopping for a new refrigerator-freezer, you have the option of choosing one with the freezer on the bottom. As with any purchasing decision, pros and cons are a factor. Whether the pros outweigh the cons depends on your health, space limitations and personal preference.
Pro: Refrigerator Position
When you purchase a bottom freezer refrigerator, the refrigerator portion of the appliance will be at eye level. This makes it more convenient for the average user because you don't have to stoop over to see inside the refrigerator. This is helpful for people who are older or who experience back problems that prevent them from bending over without discomfort, especially if they use the refrigerator more often than the freezer.
Con: Space Limitation
Some bottom freezers function like a slide-out drawer. Consequently, you have to have plenty of space to open the drawer fully to store and remove frozen items. For instance, if you have a narrow kitchen and the refrigerator is placed against a wall across from the dishwasher, it would be difficult to open the drawer fully from the front. You would have to stand to the side when sliding out the drawer.
Some refrigerators with a bottom freezer have french doors on top. This will allow you to open only part of the refrigerator when you need items, instead of swinging the entire door open. This can be a space saver. Some models offer bottom freezers that swing out to the left or right, instead of slide out like a drawer. These options make bottom freezer refrigerator models a more attractive choice.
Con: Ice Retrieval
If you don't purchase a model with an ice and water dispenser on the outside of the refrigerator door, you'll have to bend or stoop down to retrieve ice when you need it, which is somewhat inconvenient. There might be a water dispenser on the inside of the refrigerator door, but you will have to open the refrigerator to access it which can waste energy.
