Comfort foods are the foods we crave when having a bad day or after a stressful event. This list of favorite foods is different for everyone based on individual likes and dislikes, but some items are grouped as common comfort foods. Typically, these foods are not healthy and are often high in calories and fat. The CDC recommends eating these foods sparingly and cutting back if you eat them often.
Fried and greasy foods are high on the list of many people when it comes to comfort eating. Potato chips provide comfort, but also usually pack a lot of calories. Other choices of fried comfort foods include fried chicken and French fries. Sometimes people will stop by a fast food restaurant for fried food when feeling stressed or down, but these foods can also be made at home.
A study at Cornell University found that women name sweet foods as a comfort food more often than men. Some common sweets that people turn to in times of stress or anxiety include ice cream, chocolate and cookies. Ice cream was high on the list for both genders. However, men also eat sweets and name sugary items as a comfort food. Candy bars and sugary goods are other foods that may offer comfort.
High Carb Foods
Many times, foods with a high carbohydrate content are listed as comfort foods. These foods, when consumed in large quantities, can also lead to weight gain. Mashed potatoes are comforting to some while homemade macaroni and cheese is another. Pasta dishes, such as spaghetti with marinara sauce and homemade baked ziti, is also considered a comfort food. According to the study at Cornell University, men listed these items more often than women.
People turn to favorite foods for different reasons. They may need these foods in times of duress or because of their mood, so the list of comfort foods is lengthy. Any food can be considered a comfort food if it soothes you or is something you crave when stressed. Some foods are more popular as comfort foods than others. These include steaks, soup, such as chicken noodle, and popcorn.
