Frito Lay, the maker of Lay's Potato Chips, comes out with specialty flavors for holiday occasions and specific regions. Only available in Canada, Lay's Ketchup Potato Chips are a special brand, much like the Lay's Dill Pickle Potato Chip. The ingredients of Lay's Ketchup Potato Chips are not a secret, but most available product information is on the bag.
Like most potato chips, Lay's Ketchup Potato Chips come from specially selected potatoes, which are then cut very thin and fried until golden brown. Ketchup chips have a reddish hue because of the ketchup flavoring. These potatoes are not processed with porcine or pork enzymes, and the recipe for ketchup potato chips is gluten-free.
Potato chips gain crispiness and color from being fried in vegetable oil. Most of Lay's potato chips use vegetable oil; their ketchup potato chips also use sunflower oil to enhance the flavor. The baked version of Lay's Ketchup Potato Chips does not contain vegetable oil and is considerably more healthy, while still containing salt and fat.
Multiple seasonings go into Lay's Ketchup Potato Chips to produce the unique flavor. While tomato powder and garlic powder combine for the seasoning, other ingredients are used for taste and preservation, such as sugar, sodium acetate, lactose, monosodium glutamate, modified milk ingredients, dextrose, tartrazine for color and other artificial flavors.
Salt and Other Ingredients
In both regular and baked versions, Lay's Ketchup Potato Chips contain an abundance of salt. Regular varieties contain up to 430 mg of sodium per 50 g serving; the Lay's Baked Ketchup Potato Chips only have 220 mg per serving.
