Alternatives for Screen Capture

Screen capture software comes with most computer systems. The print screen feature allows you to take a snapshot of your desktop or active window. The snapshot saves to your clipboard for you to paste into a file or email. However, more advanced screen capture alternatives allow you to take video, edit snapshots that you can send in an email. Most of these programs are free to download.

  1. Snippy

    • With a little icon on your taskbar, you use Snippy to capture any part of your screen by clicking the scissors. Once you download Snippy, the icon goes on your taskbar for you to click when you need to capture a part of the screen. When ready, you click the scissors, the cursor changes to a pen and you mark any area of the screen, which then copies to the Windows clipboard. By pressing shift while clicking, you create a rectangle to mark an area of the screen to take a screen capture. In addition, Snippy has a free version of screen capture software.

The not-so-free versions include more options, such as high-quality zooming, image viewer and conversion, automatic captures and watermarking.

    Gadwin PrintScreen

The difference with Gadwin is the image editing options, which allow you to capture, edit and annotate any of your screen captures.

    Jing

    • Jing is an integrated screen capture program, which means that after taking a screen capture as a picture or video, you share the picture instantly through a web URL, email, instant message, Twitter or blog update.
