Types of Scrapbooks
Putting together the right scrapbook takes time and patience. Coming up with different page ideas and matching embellishments can be hard enough. Figuring out which type of scrapbook to purchase depends on the project you are going to create. You will need to decide on the size of the scrapbook and the type of binding you want for your pages. How the pages are bound together will ultimately depend on the scrapbook you purchase.

Post Bound
-
One of the most common types of scrapbooks to use are post-bound books. The screw-like posts, located inside the book, make it easy to add and remove pages when necessary. Most post-bound books come in a standard 12-by-12 inch size with 12 pages included. The page protectors are preloaded into the book and have holes punched in to keep them securely in place. Finished pages are loaded into the page protectors from the opening located at the top. Two pages can be loaded into one page protector back to back. This will give you a total of 24 pages that can be used in one album. After you fill up the album if more pages are needed, simply unscrew the posts and add more page protectors. Page protectors are sold separately and can be purchased at your local craft store.
Strap-Hinge
-
Some people find the strap-hinge scrapbook is a little harder to put together than the post-bound book. This scrapbook is held together with staples instead of posts. The staples are there to hold plastic straps in place. These plastic straps allow you to insert page protectors over your finished pages. In order to add or remove pages in this type of scrapbook, the strap-hinge assembly needs to be taken completely apart.
Three Ring Albums
-
Three ring scrapbook albums are basic three ring notebooks. The page protectors in this album are the same type found in the post-bound album. These albums give you more room to add and remove pages due to the ring-style design. It also allows you to add pages anywhere in the book without taking the whole thing apart. If you choose to make 8.5-by-11 inch scrapbooks, you can find a cheap three ring notebook in your local office supply store. But if you choose to do the standard 12-by-12 you will need to get your album in a crafting store.
Book Bound
-
Like its name, the book-bound scrapbook is put together like a standard hardcover book. The binding of the scrapbook is glued together holding all the page protectors securely in place. The book-bound scrapbook does not give you the option of adding more pages to your book so it is important to purchase a scrapbook with a sufficient number of pages. When shopping for a book-bound scrapbook, look for one that has perforated edges. This will give you the option of removing pages if you do not use them all.
