Cool Ways to Carve a Pumpkin

If you have been to a pumpkin carving contest lately, you've probably seen some of the cool ways you can carve a pumpkin. Some of the intricate designs and ideas people come up with will amaze you. Why not use your imagination to create a one-of-a-kind pumpkin masterpiece this year? It can be a fun project that gives you a Halloween decoration like no other.

Embellished Pumpkins

  • Instead of just carving a pumpkin, make it even more cool by embellishing and adding additional items to the presentation. Try turning the pumpkin on its side and using the stem as a nose. Carve a mouth, add white candy gum for teeth, buttons for eyes and a hat to make it more interesting.

You can even carve ears from the side of the pumpkin and reattach them for a three-dimensional effect -- and don't forget to add earrings.

Jack O' Lantern Style

  • Perhaps the most popular way to carve a pumpkin is the classic Jack O' Lantern style. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it has to be boring. Make your Jack O' Lantern cool by creating funny or unusual expressions on his face.

Or make an exceptionally large mouth so you can see inside the pumpkin and place an object on the inside -- a large black spider or skull -- to make it really cool.

Surface-Carved Pumpkins

  • Create a different type of pumpkin by carving the surface only. Instead of cutting all the way through the pumpkin wall, make cuts that are only 1/8- to 1/4-inch deep into the surface.

You can carve intricate designs like flowers or landscapes that cover the entire surface of the pumpkin. If you carve close to the inner wall of the pumpkin, you can still illuminate the pumpkin and the light will cast a warm glow through the pumpkin flesh.

Multiple Pumpkin Designs

  • Pull out all the stops and create a cool carving by using multiple pumpkins. Use smaller pumpkins to add to larger ones to make your carvings more interesting.

You can carve a large pumpkin with a big mouth. Then carve tiny pumpkins to place in the big mouth as if the large pumpkin was chomping down and eating the little ones.

Or get even more creative by carving a large pumpkin wall to look like jail cell bars and place another pumpkin inside like a prisoner looking out.
