Subconscious Effects of Subliminal Messages

The purpose of subliminal messages is to have a subconscious effect. While many people already know that fact about subliminal messages, they may be surprised to learn the exact ways in which these type of messages have an effect on the human brain and the way we think and act.

  1. Detection

    • Subliminal messages are covered in other words, sounds and/or images. However, people detect the real meaning, even if they do not notice what they are doing. For example, in a study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers found that people had more of a brain reaction to words with negative meanings than words with neutral meanings, even when the words were flashed on a screen too quickly for anyone to read.

    Motivation

    • When people perceive or hear a message, they can start to feel a strong desire for whatever that message promotes. However, they do not recognize the connection between their desire and the message. This tactic is one that commercial writers and advertisers employ in their goal to promote products in subliminal ways. A Princeton University study showed that individuals watching The Simpsons actually became thirstier when subliminal messages involved with thirst in some aspect came into play on the television screen.

    Image Association

    • Advertisers often use images that carry certain connotations with them to promote their ideas or products. An example that U.S. News and World Reports covered was that beer is often associated with bulls, cobras and tigers when the product is aimed at poorer people. People associate these images with power, so advertisers use these to suggest power and control to those who have little control in their own lives. Some advertisers use people dressed in white coats to promote medicine, since that piece of clothing elicits images of a doctor.

    Following Examples

    • Sometimes the subliminal messages are not so deeply embedded, but people do not notice them right away. For example, a television show can depict individuals who are recycling, going to the gym, hanging out at bars a lot or smoking cigarettes. At the first look, these images are just viewed as a source of entertainment. However, after viewing these shows some people want to engage in these various actions to one degree or another.
