Poker is basically a card game where players try to get the best hand and bet to gain the most from the pot. Choose a dealer. The dealer shuffles the cards and has the player to the left cut the deck. The dealer declares what the minimum and maximum bet is and whether wild cards will be used. She deals five cards out to each player in turn. After all dealing, betting, raising and calls, all hands are shown and the high hand wins.

Draw poker is a popular variant of the game. The dealer determines the minimum and maximum cards that can be drawn, any wild cards and determines the betting rounds. After the initial deal, the draw cards are discarded and the dealer replaces discards in turn for each player. After the final betting round, each player chooses and shows their best five cards for their final hand.

Hole cards are those dealt and not shown during the game. Stud poker uses the same five cards as straight poker. The dealer gives one card face down to each player in turn. He deals the next three cards face up, one at a time to each player. He deals the last card face down, as the second hole card. The dealer determines the wild cards if any and the number and placement of betting rounds before dealing. In seven card stud the dealer lays down two more cards during the face up portion. Each player chooses their best five cards. The best hand wins.

A variant combining traits of solitaire and poker can be played alone or with several people. Single players simply lay out the cards in a five by five grid starting in the upper left. Only spaces adjacent to another played card can be filled. The object is to get the best hands in the five rows. For two players, one gives out one card to each player until all cards are dealt. Then each player builds the best grid. Compare each row for the best hand. The player with the three highest hands wins.
