Natural salicylates can make people allergic.

Some foods contain natural salicylates, which are plant acids used to form the basis of aspirin and other pain-reliving drugs. Plenty of beauty and health products also contain salicylates. Some people may be allergic to natural salicylates due to a low tolerance to the chemical.

  1. Fruits

Fruits are one of the most common foods that naturally contain salicylates. Some of these fruits include avocados, apples, blueberries, kiwis, dates, raspberries, peaches, grapes, figs, strawberries, plums, prunes, grapefruits and cherries. Eating these fruits may turn out to be a problem for people who are allergic to phenol, a component of salicylic acid found in many fruits.

    Vegetables

    • Vegetables are another common food containing natural salicylates. Some examples of these different kinds of vegetables are cucumbers, cauliflowers, alfalfa, radishes, mushrooms, eggplant, broad beans, zucchini, hot peppers and broccoli. Natural salicylates from these vegetables usually cause a reaction in low-tolerance people only after they have been allowed to build up in the body. A moderate quantity of these vegetables may not bring about a reaction, but if people eat these vegetables over time, a reaction may occur.

    Nuts and Seeds

Many nuts and seeds feature a moderate to high amount of natural salicylates. Nuts and seeds that feature only a negligible to small amount of natural salicylates are cashews, hazelnuts, poppy seeds, sunflower seed, and pecans. The nuts and seeds that contain a moderate amount of natural salicylates are walnuts, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, dessicated coconut and peanut butter. The nuts and seeds that have a high to very high amount of natural salicylates are pistachios, pine nuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, almonds, water chestnuts and peanuts that still have their skins on.

    Oils and Fats

Certain kinds of oils and fats contain natural salicylates that people with low tolerance may want to avoid. The amount of natural salicylates in oils and fats is not always the same. Many oils have very low levels of salicylates. Sunflower oil, soy oil, canola oil and safflower oil all feature very low amounts of salicylates. Butter and margarine also have very low amounts. Ghee has a low amount of salicylates, while peanut oil, almond oil and corn oil feature a moderate amount. High to very high amounts of salicylates are found in walnut oil, sesame oil, coconut oil, olive oil and copha.
