Young women have a plethora of dressy clothing options from which to choose, ranging from sexy cocktail dresses to formal, floor-length gowns. More mature women, however, will shy away from some of these styles, which appeal to a younger demographic. Fortunately, a range of age-appropriate, figure-flattering dressy clothes are available. The key is dressing for your body type and wearing something in which you are comfortable.

Suit

A well-tailored suit can cross over from day to night, and this look is ideal for a mature woman. A black blazer and skirt works well for the office, but you can dress it up for more formal occasions as well. Ditch the crisp button-down shirt, and wear a jewel-toned top under the blazer. You can even choose a top with a bit of sparkle, or accessorize with a bold statement necklace to dress up this classic wardrobe piece.

Pants and a Blouse

Dresses are not the only way to look appropriately formal, and some more mature women might not be comfortable wearing a skin-baring dress. A tailored pair of trouser pants in a neutral tone, such as black, gray or tan, can provide more coverage for a dressy event. Dress up these classic pants with a blouse — look for one with some elaborate detailing, such as ruffles on the sleeves or a beaded neckline. Stay away from a neutral top; instead, add a top with a pop of color.

Shift Dress

A shift dress is a classic piece that works well in every woman's wardrobe, especially a mature woman's. Rather than a slinky cocktail dress, the shift dress is a figure-flattering piece that works well for formal events. Find a dress that hits right at or below the knee. You can pair the shift dress with a blazer and statement necklace if you do not want to show off your arms. A pair of classic heels can accentuate your legs in this ensemble.

Skirt and Top

A skirt and top is a classic outfit that works well for formal events. The key here is to find balance. If you choose a more fitted skirt, like a pencil skirt, choose a blouse that has some flow — you do not want to go fitted on the top or bottom. Conversely, a pleated or more flowy skirt calls for a fitted top. Keep the skirt length-appropriate — the skirt should hit around the knee or lower to remain age-appropriate.
