An ice cream sundae is one of the simplest desserts you can make. Fill a bowl with ice cream, cover it in sauce and you're done. If you feel adventurous, you can add cherries or nuts or different kinds of ice cream, but the heart of the dish is still the same. While it pays to be adventurous with your ingredients, their are a few classic sundaes that have become famous the world over.
Classic Ice Cream Sundae
The classic sundae couldn't be easier. Fill a bowl with vanilla ice cream and top with sauce, whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Usually this type of sundae is named after the type of sauce used, so a strawberry sundae would use strawberry sauce. Stick a wafer in the top for extra flair.
Hot Fudge Sundae
The mixtures of hot and cold in this sundae really make it work. Fill a bowl with vanilla ice cream and then cover with warm fudge. Spray a generous helping of whipped cream on top of the fudge and garnish with nuts and a cherry. Remember to eat it quickly, though, while the fudge is hot.
For a sundae with crunch, crumble some wafers into the bottom of your bowl then add a scoop of ice cream. Drizzle with your favorite sauce, then crumble more wafers on top, add another scoop of ice cream and drizzle again. Repeat as many times as you wish.
Brownie Ice Cream Sundae
Crumble a brownie into the bottom of your bowl and cover it with ice cream. The cake will quickly absorb some of the ice cream flavor, making it extra moist. Top with a chocolate sauce, whipped cream and sprinkle with nuts if desired.
This sundae is great because you get to use two different kinds of ice cream. Start with a scoop of vanilla and cover it with chocolate sauce. Then add a scoop of chocolate and cover with marshmallow cream. Cover the whole sundae with whipped cream.
