Place a rope attached to stakes in a 3-foot perimeter around the fire to help keep the kids safely away from the fire. Decorate the surroundings with a theme of the child's favorite character. Pass out glow-in-the-dark necklaces for the kids to wear so you can keep better track of them in the dark.
Let the children play games and fill up water balloons to throw at each other to keep cool. Serve graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows, along with long sticks, for the kids to make s'mores. At the end of the bonfire party, have the children sit around the fire and take turns telling ghost stories.

Roast marshmallows on a stick and see who can be the first to roast one that is cooked perfectly light brown all over. Those who set their marshmallow on fire are eliminated from the contest.
Singing is always fun at a bonfire. See if everyone together can finish a complete song by taking turns singing each line of the song, or take turns singing a verse from a song and see who can guess the name of the song.
