Bandana Folding Tips thumbnail
There is an art to tying a bandana.

A bandana, or bandanna, comes from the Hindu word bandhu, which derives from a method of dying using badhnati binds. This is similar to the tie-dying techniques we use today. The bandana is a popular garment as it can be used in such a variety of ways. A bandana is a large brightly colored handkerchief that is often patterned. It is a unisex item that has the versatility to be folded to create a headscarf, a necktie, a headband or even a bikini top. Does this Spark an idea?

A regular headband is usually all one piece and simply slips over the head. The tennis style headband, which is worn by tennis players, is made from a bandana that is tied around your head. To fold your bandana into a tennis style headband is fairly simple. Lay your bandana on a flat surface and then fold the bottom left corner to the middle. Fold the fold you have just made in half again toward the middle. Fold the top right hand corner into the middle. Fold this fold in half again toward the middle. Now fold the two folds you have already made together so that it is the width of a head band. Tie this around your forehead, tying it at the back of the head.

One of the most common ways to wear a bandana is to wear it as a headscarf. The folding technique is to lay the bandana on a flat surface. Take hold of two opposite corners and fold them inward until the bandana is about 5 inches wide. To put it on lean over the bandana and then carefully pick it up and put the widest part against your forehead. Tie the remaining corners in the middle at the back of your head.

    Neck Tie

A neck tie is great for use in the summer to keep the sun from burning your skin and can look stylish if matched with your outfit. Lay the bandana on a flat surface and then fold into a triangle. To create a small 2-inch rim, take the longest side of the triangle and fold over about 2 inches. Now place the neck tie around your neck and loosely tie. You can have the knot at the side, back or front of your neck, depending on what look you are going for.

    Bikini Top or Bandeau

    • On a hot summer day the bandana bikini top or bandeau makes stylish and cool beachwear. To make a bikini top or bandeau simply fold two opposite diagonal corners inward twice so that you end up with a long sash. Wrap the sash around your torso and tie the two ends together at the front into a bow. To make this bikini top fit a woman's body you will need to have a fairly large size bandana, or your could tie two bandana's together. This top will work well on a small child.
