Wiffle Ball Field Specs

Made of tough rubbery plastic with several holes cut out to maximize a pitcher's ability to curve it, the Wiffle ball can be played both indoors and out. Most players choose to use the ball in a yard or street. The Wiffle Ball, Inc., manufacturer of the ball, recommends players use certain field dimensions when playing a game with it.

  1. Size

    • A Wiffle ball field does not use bases, as the official game does not require base running. Instead, players earn bases depending on how far they hit the ball in the air. Wiffle Ball, Inc., recommends that markers designating home runs be placed 60 feet from home plate and at least 20 feet apart. Balls hit outside of the markers will be considered to be foul.

    Base Hit Areas

    • Markers representing a single base hit should be placed 20 feet from home plate. Any ground ball hit in fair territory that is not stopped before it stops rolling will be considered a single. Markers for doubles should be located 20 feet behind the single base hit markers. A ball hit in the air in this territory that is not caught is worth two bases. The markers for triples should be placed 20 feet behind the double markers; balls that land here are worth three bases. Balls hit past these markers that are not caught constitute home runs.

    Scoring

    • General baseball scoring rules apply in Wiffle ball, with the exception that runners in this game are only imaginary. If a player hits a single and the next player hits a double, the team will have runners on second and third. A subsequent double would score the two imaginary runners and place another runner on second base. Players can choose how many innings they wish to play.

    Teams

    • Only two players are required in the game, and the maximum number is 10, with five on each team. When a full team is on the field, they should be placed as follows -- pitcher, catcher, home run area fielder, triple area fielder and double area fielder.
