List of Internet Browsers

A Web browser is a program used to view HTML documents on the Internet. As of March 2011, Microsoft Internet Explorer is the most popular browser, followed by Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Each of the major browsers also have mobile versions. The browsers share many similar useful features including tab browsing and tab tearing. With the exception of Internet Explorer, the major Internet browsers are compatible with current Windows and Mac operating systems.

  1. Internet Explorer

    • Internet Explorer comes pre-installed on any computer with a Windows operating system, so most computers already have it. Internet Explorer 9 has a combined search and address bar feature. Internet Explorer integrates with the Windows 7 jump list feature. IE9 is also compatible with Windows Vista, but not compatible with Windows XP. Internet Explorer 8 is compatible with Windows XP. Internet Explorer also has many downloadable add-ons. Internet Explorer 9 has a private browsing feature in which cookies are not saved.

    Mozilla Firefox

    • Firefox 3 is an open source browser created by Mozilla. Firefox 3 does not work with the jump list feature in Windows 7. Firefox 3 has downloadable add-ons and themes. Firefox 3 has a private browsing feature in which cookies are not saved, and the browser has built-in password management.

    Google Chrome

    • Google Chrome 10 is a minimalist browser with fast Web page loading. It has a combined search and address bar feature. Additionally, it creates thumbnails of your top sites and adds them to the blank tab page for easy access. Chrome is an open source program created by Google.

    Safari

    • Safari 5 is included in the Mac operating system, and it is also the default on iPads, iPhones and iPods. It can be installed on computers with a Windows operating system. Its features include a minimalist browser with private browsing and password management.

    Opera

    • Opera 11 was developed by Opera Software. Opera has downloadable skins to change the look of the browser and a mail client. Some of Opera's other notable features are mouse flicks, integration of BitTorrent, IRC chat and an Internet history rewind feature. The Wii's Internet channel also uses Opera.

    Others

    • In addition to the major browsers on the market, other Web browsers available as of March 2011 include Netscape Navigator, OmniWeb, Epiphany, AOL Explorer, Maxthon, Shiira, SeaMonkey, K-Meleon, Galeon, Camino, Avant, iCab, Sputnik, NetSurf, Flock, Conkeror and Konqueror.
