The Caterpillar 545 has a transmission that features five-speed forward and three in reverse, and four working gears, in order to match horsepower to skidding requirements. It has electronic shift control, a transmission filter with an indicator light, a transmission cooler and push button transmission control. Its transmission system is designed to provide on the go shifting in all gears. The Caterpillar will not move if started in gear.
The operating weight of the grapple equipped 545 skidder, which includes enclosed cab, 30.5 tires, blade, dual-function arch 16-foot bunching grapple standard lights, and full fuel tank, is 40,161 lbs. The operating weight of the cable equipped skidder, includes open cab, 30.5 tires, rear cable fenders, winch, blade, arch arrangement, standard lights, is 39,901 lbs.
