A log skidder is a heavy-duty vehicle used in logging operations for pulling away felled trees in a forest, in a process known as skidding. The Caterpillar 545 is a logging skidder equipped with a powerful Cat 3306 DITA diesel engine. It was introduced in 1999 and only made available in the U.S. market during its manufacturing run.

Engine

  • The engine equipped in Caterpillar 545 possesses a displacement of 638 cubic inches, and a bore by stroke of 4.75 inches by 6.00 inches. It has cam-turned and tapered, cast aluminum-alloy pistons, which have three rings and are cooled by oil spray. It has steel-backed, copper-bounded crankshaft bearings, and hardened crankshaft bearings. It is equipped with dry-type air cleaners, with primary and secondary elements. It possesses a 24-volt electric starting system with a 75-amp alternator two 755-CCA batteries. The engine is able to generate a peak power output of 225 horsepower at 2,200 rpm.

Transmission

  • The Caterpillar 545 has a transmission that features five-speed forward and three in reverse, and four working gears, in order to match horsepower to skidding requirements. It has electronic shift control, a transmission filter with an indicator light, a transmission cooler and push button transmission control. Its transmission system is designed to provide on the go shifting in all gears. The Caterpillar will not move if started in gear.

Operating Weight

  • The operating weight of the grapple equipped 545 skidder, which includes enclosed cab, 30.5 tires, blade, dual-function arch 16-foot bunching grapple standard lights, and full fuel tank, is 40,161 lbs. The operating weight of the cable equipped skidder, includes open cab, 30.5 tires, rear cable fenders, winch, blade, arch arrangement, standard lights, is 39,901 lbs.

Hydraulic Controls

  • The Caterpillar 545 possesses closed center, variable flow hydraulic controls. Its pressure compensating system consists of a pump, tank with filter, valves, lines, linkage, and multi-axis control lever. It possesses a relief valve setting of 3,045 psi, and a grapple system relief valve settings of 3,045 psi. It possesses a reservoir tank capacity of 17 gallons.
