Different Kinds of Buzz Cuts for Boys

The buzz cut is a short hairstyle for boys that requires little styling. The benefits of having a buzz cut are that you don't need styling products, your hair doesn't get in your face and this cut keeps your head cool in the summer. Buzz cuts come in different lengths at the top of the head and on the sides, allowing for a variety of styles to choose from.

Even-Length Buzz Cuts

When choosing a buzz cut hair style, you need to decide if you would like your hair to be all one length, or if you would like the sides to be shorter than the top of your head. To have a barber give you a buzz cut all one length, dictate a single clipper number for both the sides and top of your head. Typical clipper numbers for a buzz cut are: "1" for a 1/8-inch cut, "2" for a 1/4-inch cut, "3" for a 3/8-inch cut, "4" for a 1/2-inch cut, "7" for a 7/8-inch cut and "8" for a 1-inch-length cut.

Short Sides

If you don't want your hair all one length, you may choose to have a buzz cut in which the sides are shorter than the top of your head. These styles are preferable for boys who would like to style hair on the top of their head, but do not want a full head of hair to style. It is also preferable for boys who like the idea of the buzz cut but are unsure if they would like to lose so much hair. When choosing this style, you will need to decide what clipper number you would like the sides to be and what clipper number you would like the top to be. Make sure to choose a smaller clipper number for the sides, and don't choose two numbers that differ greatly because your hair will not blend as well.

Very Short Cuts

If you would like a very short buzz cut, you will want to choose from the smallest clipper numbers. Very short cuts often appeal to those in the military or those who don't like to get their hair cut often. If you want your head to be close to shaved, you may decide not to use a clipper guard. The shortest cut you can get with a clipper guard is a number "1," which entails a 1/8-inch cut. Other short buzz cuts are the number "2" and number "3."

Medium and Longer Buzz Cuts

Medium and longer buzz cuts are ideal for boys who want the low maintenance of a buzz cut but do not want to lose a lot of hair on the sides or top of their head. The variety of lengths a buzz cut offers means you don't have to be going for the "bald" look to get one. For a medium to longer buzz cut, make sure to choose a higher clipper number, like a "4," a "7" or an "8."
