Can You Skype on an iPad?

Although the iPad has advanced communications capabilities, it is not typically thought of as an audio phone like the iPhone. However, it has all of the hardware necessary to make voice over Internet calls using Skype wherever it can receive a data signal. The iPad can use the same Skype application that is available on the iPhone to make calls to other Skype users on computers, phones or other iPads.

  1. Software

    • In order to use Skype on the iPad, you will have to download the Skype app from the iTunes App Store. As of March 2011, the iPad Skype client is a free download through the store. After installing Skype on your iPad, you can open the application by selecting the icon on your home screen. The Skype app will prompt you to create a new Skype account or input your existing Skype account's information. Once you have logged in to Skype, you will have access to your complete Skype contact list which you can use to make calls or send text messages to other Skype contacts.

    Hardware

    • Skype on your iPad utilizes your iPad's built in speaker and microphone. The iPad speaker's volume and the distance between the speaker and the microphone make it impractical for use as a normal phone, though it is useful as a speakerphone. Skype recommends that you purchase a 1/8-inch minijack style headset to use with your iPad. The headset can plug directly into your iPad, allowing you to make private, non-speakerphone calls with your iPad.

    Limitations

    • Unlike the iPhone 4 and many computers, the first iPad model does not have a front-facing camera. Therefore, the Skype app does not broadcast video when it is used on an iPad. It can still receive video from compatible devices and send an audio feed to those devices. The iPad 2 features a front-facing camera which allows for two-way video chatting. When you are away from a Wi-Fi network, Skype will use the iPad's 3G data connection, if available. This can result in a large amount of data usage, particularly if you are receiving video calls. Monitor your data usage to avoid these charges.

    Other Calls

    • Your iPad can make calls to non-Skype devices and phone numbers if you add minutes to your Skype account. As of March 2011, Skype charges 2.3 cents per minute for regular calls within the United States to American phones. They also offer subscription plans for as little as 1.2 cents per minute. These plans are only necessary if you need to call non-Skype contacts using your iPad. You can purchase minutes for your Skype account through a web browser on your computer or your iPad.
