Electrical Technologist Salary
Electrical technologists, or technicians, work with electrical and electronic engineers and help them in their projects. These technicians build, test and fix electric and electronic equipment and parts -- from computers to complicated navigational systems. However, the primary work of technologists consists of diagnostics and testing. They are employed in a variety of industries across the United States, and their salary depends on the employing industry and geographic location.

According to the BLS, the industries that employed the largest numbers of electrical technicians in 2009 -- from 7,810 to 16,220 -- included engineering and architectural firms, companies involved in semiconductor components and measuring equipment manufacturing, the U.S. government and the postal service. The salaries there ranged from $51,310 to $75,740 per year on average. The federal government paid the highest annual mean salary in the country -- $75,740 a year. Other high-paying employers were in the oil and gas extraction industry, waste management and the shipbuilding industry. They paid an average salary from $64,990 to $75,740 per year.

The BLS reports that in 2009 The top five paying states for electrical technicians - with average salaries ranging from $60,720 to $77,040 -- were Alaska, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland and Massachusetts. Alaska was also the state with one of the highest concentrations of these professionals. Alaska in general employs large numbers of various engineering technicians and pays them some of the highest salaries.

In 2009, Anchorage, Alaska, was the top-paying city, according to the BLS. The average salary of electrical technicians per year there was $84,410. Other high-paying cities included Salinas and Bakersfield in California, and Bremerton, Washington. Pascagoula, Mississippi, was the top-paying city out of those with the highest concentrations of electrical technologists. The average yearly salary there was $62,780. Other cities in this category included Lowell and Framingham, Massachusetts, with average annual salaries of $47,950 and $52,670, respectively.
