Ways to Entertain Myself at a Boring Bar

Bars offer a place to unwind after a long day.

Whether you're at a bar for the social atmosphere, to play billiards or to try beer from local craft breweries, an evening at the bar with friends may or may not go as planned. Depending on the crowd you're with, your companions may decide to mingle with other people, leaving you in the dust to entertain yourself.

Play a Game

Pool is a low-key game to play with new people.

Every bar creates a certain atmosphere. For example, a more relaxed bar may have a dart board, pool table, a beer pong table or even karaoke, while a more formal bar may have live music or art on display. To spice the evening up, pick up some darts or a pool cue and make a wager with some friends or fellow bar patrons on a game. If there is no entertainment at the bar, pull out a deck of cards and suggest playing a game with some friends.

Start a Conversation

Ask a friend how her recent date went, what her plans are for the upcoming weekend, what team she is rooting for in an upcoming sporting event or what country she would most like to visit. For a more intellectual group, consider sparking a political or ethical debate. For a lighthearted group, a series of "What if" questions can spark up the conversation.

Meet Someone New

There are many new people to meet at a bar.

Falling back on the usual crowd of friends is easy. Consider opening yourself up to meeting new people. Take a look around and see if anyone in the bar strikes your eye as someone you may enjoy a conversation with. He or she may appear interesting, look familiar or simply be wearing a shirt from a band you like.

Try Something New

Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Try hitting up the dance floor. If there isn't a dance floor, start one. If you always order the same drink, try a drink your friend orders or a drink you saw in a movie. If the bar serves local craft beers, consider trying one. If you're at a karaoke bar, pick your favorite song and give karaoke a try.
