Teach children the meaning of Easter.

Easter is the time that we honor and recognize Jesus Christ's resurrection from the dead and his promise of eternal life for all who believe in Him. If children are to understand the reverence with which we acknowledge Easter, it must not become another mind-numbing commercial venture that children see as just another reason to get gifts. Treasure hunts and other types of celebrations should focus on the reason we celebrate and not the activity itself. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Easter Program

    • Give each child a short Easter speech to learn a week or two before Easter. On Easter Sunday hide plastic eggs with scriptures about Christ's crucifixion and resurrection in terms children will understand. Set up a Cross at the end of the hunt. When the children arrive, pass out treats and have an Easter program on the grounds with children reading the scriptures from the eggs they found and reciting their Easter speeches.

    Calendar of Events

    • Give the children a calendar of events showing what happened each day leading up to the resurrection. Instruct them to boil, color and number an egg for each day. All of the eggs should be brought to the church on Easter Sunday and hidden around the grounds. As they find the eggs and see the number on it, they will understand what happened on that day and Christ's suffering becomes more real to them.

    Family Time Together

    • Make the night before Easter a family time to boil and color eggs. Talk about serving others and how Christ led a life of service. Write a number on each egg that corresponds to a list of service projects, such as taking out the trash for the elderly neighbor or befriending someone at school who does not have any friends. As each child finds an egg, he matches it to the list and performs that service.

    Puzzle

    • Create a large scene showing Christ's death, burial and resurrection. On the back write a clue to a big treasure. Cut the scene into pieces and hide them in plastic eggs around the grounds. Children find the pieces and put together the puzzle. When it is complete, flip it over and read the clue to the location of the treasure. They solve the clue and find the treasure.
