How Can Fourth-Graders Help Save Endangered Animals?
Raising awareness of endangered animals early in a child's life help that child better understand what it takes to save endangered animals and how he can help do so later in life. Fourth-grade pupils can find several ways to learn how to help save endangered animals, a subject that's both educational and enjoyable.
-
Flier Design
-
Have your fourth-grade pupils come up with a design for a flier with information about an endangered animal and a picture of the animal. Have them include information about where the animal is found, its biggest threat and ways that readers of the flier can help ensure the animal's survival. This artistic activity will help the children understand how to preserve and protect animals better.
Research Report
-
Have each pupil choose an endangered animal from somewhere in the world and read about it. Have pupils prepare a simple report that profiles the animal, including where the animal lives, the animal's effect on the environment and the major threats to the animal, such as hunting or pollution. Then each pupil can give a summary of his animal for the class. You can even organize an assembly and have pupils talk about the endangered animal to the entire school. You can include ways that pupils can help save that animal at the end of the report.
-
Animal Narrative
-
Have the children research an endangered animal, then write a story from the animal's point of view. The story can be about how the animal became endangered, how lonely the animal is, or any other topic that your pupils can think of. This will help teach them more about the animal, and they can share their stories with friends and families to help spread awareness.
Adopt an Animal
-
Though you might not be able to adopt an endangered animal, because it's often illegal to keep them as pets, you can get a classroom pet to help students learn more about how an animal lives and how to take care of it.
Some kinds of butterflies are endangered, so you can get several caterpillars and have the students observe them as they evolve into (non-endangered) butterflies. Many kinds of snakes are also endangered; you can get a harmless snake and keep it as a class pet so that the students can learn more about the species.
