It is healthy for senior citizens to participate in group activities.

The senior citizen population in the United States continues to grow. According to the Volunteer Family, there are approximately 34 million individuals over the age of 65 living in the United States. It is important for elderly people to participate in different activities because it keeps them active and healthy. Many of them are either retired or work part-time, leaving plenty of time for extracurricular activities. Whether it's volunteering or exercising outdoors, there are many activities seniors can choose from.

  1. Volunteering

    • Seniors may feel better about themselves and regain a sense of purpose by volunteering in their community. Animal shelters are always in need of volunteers to take care of the animals. A member of a senior group or a director of a senior citizen center can arrange a day when seniors can help out at a local animal shelter. Seniors can volunteer to bathe and feed the animals.

    Walking

    • Walking outdoors is a great way for senior citizens to get active. A group of senior citizens should aim to walk at least three days a week. Seniors should try walking in different areas every day to avoid becoming bored with the same surroundings. Some great places to walk include the beach and the park.

    Cooking

    • A fun activity senior citizens can try is cooking a meal together. A group of three to five seniors should first decide on what they want to cook and then get a recipe online or from a cookbook. They should pick a dish that they have never made before that is also simple to cook. Seniors can learn something new and socialize with friends at the same time.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • A scavenger hunt is a great way for seniors to exercise their minds and work in a team. Organize a scavengar hunt in an activity room. Assign seniors to work in teams to complete the hunt. Give each team a list of items to search for in the room. An example would be to find a certain picture in a book located in the room. The first team to find all the items on the list wins.
