A bride's hairstyle should reflect her personality.

Since 2000, wedding hairstyles have been as individualized and special as the brides wearing them. The big hair and over-the-top styles of the 1980s and '90s softened and became more natural during the 2000s, and the styles for 2009 were no exception. The hairstyle for a bride's big day vary depending on location, time of year and formality of the event. Most importantly, however, the bride must love the look. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Formal Looks

    • The classic updo is a tried and true hairstyle for making a bride look like a beautiful princess on her wedding day. In 2009, updos varied greatly and were a matter of taste. One formal look was pulling the hair tight on top of the head and arranging it into a neat crown of large barrel curls.

This look paired well with a tiara to complete the princess look. Another formal look from 2009 that always looks chic was a classic, neat chignon bun, worn on the back of the head in the middle or at the base. A veil arranged to hang from the bun made a lovely finishing touch.

    Soft and Romantic Styles

    • Updos were also worn less formally in 2009, giving a softer look than a tight bun. Hair piled loosely on top of the head and curled to leave tendrils hanging down was a look that was still elegant, but a bit more relaxed. Another popular softer look was the hair worn half up and half down.

The Grecian style was a hot trend in 2009 and it consisted of pulling the sides and front of the hair up and pinning it loosely, allowing the back to hang down in curls like a Grecian goddess. Wearing her hair all down in soft, romantic curls was also a beautiful, natural look for brides that year.

    Short Styles

    • Hair extensions that were all the rage earlier in the decade were out for brides with short hair in 2009. Brides were opting for a look that brought out their own natural beauty. One short hair look saw the hair styled with a severe side part and swept to the side. It was given texture and tousled with product to ensure its hold all day long.

Hair accessories were big in 2009 and brides with short hair could make their hairdo pop with everything from rhinestone headbands to feathers to a large flower tucked behind the ear.

    Vintage Looks

    • Vintage styles from the 1930s, '40s and '50s were often seen in 2009 weddings. Retro hairstyles that year included the French twist, which was a classic look in the '30s and early '40s. Another vintage look was a sleek long hairstyle, parted on the side and curled in gentle soft waves, much like screen siren Veronica Lake.

A retro updo that was big in 2009 was a much toned-down version of the 1950s beehive, putting the hair up and backcombing the top for height. Worn with a headband, this look was given a modern twist and seen on trendy brides in 2009.
