Americans like a hearty meal. According to numerous surveys of the most popular restaurants across the country -- both fast food and sit-down casual dining chains -- Americans favor restaurants with large portions. Healthy choices and fresh ingredients are not the priorities among the top choices, although in some cases variety is. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cheesecake Factory

    • In August 2010, Nation's Restaurant News reported that a survey of 5,000 Market Force Research restaurant mystery shoppers around the nation revealed Cheesecake Factory as their #1 choice of casual dining restaurant. The report indicated that respondents felt the restaurant chain could increase its customer base further by improving customer service. Cheesecake factory is known for its extensive and varied menu featuring large portions. It also heavily emphasizes the many flavors and varieties of its signature dessert: cheesecake. Entrees range in price from $9 to $40 as of February, 2011.

    Red Robin

    • With ratings adjusted for the number of locations, the Market Force survey declared Red Robin Gourmet Hamburgers as America's #2 favorite sit-down restaurant. Red Robin features more than 20 varieties of burgers and hot sandwiches, all accompanied by an unlimited supply of their seasoned steak fries. With entertainment and meals for kids, as well as entrees for $8-$12, Red Robin has an effective strategy for capturing the family and teenage markets.

    Wendy's

    • The Washington Examiner reported in January, 2011 that Wendy's had overtaken McDonald's as America's favorite fast-food chain. A survey by Rasmussen Reports revealed that 62 percent of Americans had a favorable view of Wendy's, and 16 percent had a very favorable view. Wendy's menu centers around its traditional hamburgers, fries and thick milkshakes known as Frosties. Meals range up to $8, although many items are less than $2 each.

    McDonald's

    • The world's largest fast food chain has become the second most popular in America according to the Rasmussen poll. McDonald's began as a hamburger chain. Today, it remains centered around burgers, but has widened its menu to include price points as low as $1, and lighter options such as salads and grilled items. McDonald's also markets heavily to children with the use of its Ronald McDonald character and Playland playgrounds at many of its stores. McDonald's works to stay on top of trends and lifestyle changes so it can modify its offerings to keep pace. The recent addition of free Wi-Fi in most locations addresses peoples' changing needs, especially business people grabbing a lunch during the lunch hour.
