Math Games for Adding Fractions
Math games can offer children a hands-on, interactive approach to improving their understanding of fractions. Teaching children how to add fractions through the use of games can turn learning this concept from a chore to a fun-filled activity. Math games will give the students the opportunity to practice their new skills in a way that they will enjoy. Students will want to understand fraction math to win the game.

Fraction Go Fish

In this version of Go Fish, students will need to add fractions together to win the game. Purchase a pack of blank index cards. Write a fraction such as 1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4 on each card. Divide the children into groups of four or five and give each group of students a stack of the fraction cards. Have one child in each group shuffle the cards and pass out three or four cards to each member. Place the remaining cards in the center of the table or floor. Children will take turns asking the other players for a fraction that they need to equal one. If the student they ask doesn't have it, they will say "Go fish." The first student will then draw a card from the pile. Students can lay down their cards once they equal one. The first student to lay down all his cards wins.
Fraction Dice Game

Students will take turns rolling the fraction die to determine their score. The teacher prepares the dice by writing fractions on squares of paper and taping them to the sides of each die before class. Students are divided into groups of three or four and given a fraction die. The children will each take a turn rolling the die and record the fraction they roll on a piece of paper. Each time they roll, they will write down the fraction and add it to their score. The winner of the game can be the student who has the highest score after playing for a certain time period or the first student to reach a set number.

Fraction Bingo

Bingo cards are given to each student with a fraction written in each card's space. The teacher then calls out or writes on the board an addition problem involving fractions. Children will solve the problem and place a piece of paper over the answer if it is on their card. The first child to cover a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row will win the game. The children are instructed to remove the pieces from their cards and they game is restarted.
Fraction Match

Fraction match will allow students to practice their fraction addition through the use of visual cards. A series of fraction addition problems are written on a pile of index cards, one problem per card. The answer to each problem is then drawn onto a separate index card in the form of a shaded circle. For example, one card will read 1/4+1/4=. The corresponding card will contain a circle divided into fourths with two of the sections shaded in to represent 1/2. All cards are mixed together and placed upside down on a flat surface. The children will take turns turning over two cards at a time to match the problem with the answer.
