Every Time I Close My Word 2007 Program it Encounters a Problem on XP
Microsoft Office is a suite of productivity programs that first began in 1990 as a bundle of three applications. Since then, Microsoft has released numerous versions of the suite. If you use Word 2007 on Windows XP, it may become corrupted, prompting an error that states it has "encountered an error and needs to close."
-
Corrupted Word Data Registry Key
-
The options you use frequently in Word 2007 are stored in a single key within your registry. From time to time, this key is subject to corruption, which can cause the error message when you close Word 2007. Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Data," reboot and open Word 2007. A new key will regenerate, even if it was not corrupted to begin with.
Corrupted Word Options Registry Key
-
Like the Data key, Microsoft stores an Options key in the registry. This key stores changes you make to the Word menu. Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Office\12.0\Word\Options," reboot and open Word 2007. Like the Data key, a new file will regenerate, so no problems will occur by deleting it.
-
Corrupted Normal.dotm File
-
Formatting and macros are stored in a global template file called Normal.dotm. Again, this file can become corrupted. Instead of deleting the file, however, simply rename it and let Word 2007 generate a new one. Open Command prompt, enter "ren %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Normal.dotm OldNormal.dotm" and open Word 2007.
Corrupted Add-In
-
If you use third-party add-ins for Word 2007, one may be corrupting the program by being outdated. Run "%programfiles%\Microsoft\Office\Office12\Startup\" and add ".old" to the first add-in. Start Word 2007 and see if the problem occurs. If not, remove the ".old" from the first add-in and add it to the second one. Continue doing this until you come across the problem add-in.
