When approaching the winter holidays, many sixth graders tend to get excited and ready for the winter break. Keep your students busy and involved in the classroom by planning a variety of winter-themed activities. Games give students a chance to build social skills and crafts allow them an opportunity to show off their artistic skills. Activity ideas and a few supplies are all you need to get started creating entertaining winter activities for your class.

Funny Activities

Play a game of winter charades using words like snowman, Christmas present, Rudolph and Santa. Divide the players into two teams. Have one player from each team come up one at a time to act out a winter-theme word. If his team guesses correctly in one minute, they earn a point. The team who earns five points first wins the game. Another funny idea is to give each team two rolls of toilet paper and construction paper. The team must decorate one teammate as “Frosty the Snowman.” Teams can use the construction paper to make the eyes, nose and mouth. The first team to completely wrap their teammate using the toilet paper and add the accessories wins the game.

Ornament Crafts

Make an easy snowflake ornament by giving each student a sheet of waxed paper and a bottle of glue. Have the children draw a snowflake design on the waxed paper using the glue. Allow the glue to dry overnight and peel off the next day. Attach a piece of fishing line to the snowflake to make an ornament. Alternatively, have the students make several small snowflakes instead of one large snowflake. Have them make a melted snowman ornament by drawing a blob of glue on the wax paper. Stick a miniature plastic carrot in the glue along with miniature black pony beads to resemble the eyes, nose and mouth.

Paper Activities

For a simple game, give each student a bingo card filled with pictures of winter items like Santa, candy canes, gifts, wreath and reindeer. Give the children a bowl of peppermints to use as bingo markers. Call out the words and the first player to bingo wins the game. For added fun, tell your sixth grader to yell “Happy Holidays” instead of bingo. Another idea is to write “Winter Holidays” at the top of several sheets of paper. Tell the children they have two minutes to come up with as many words as they can using only the letters in the words “Winter Holidays.” The player with the most correct words wins the game.

Other Activities

Create an indoor snowball fight by drawing a line down the middle of the classroom using tape. Divide the students into two teams and have each team stand on opposite sides. Give each team 20 sheets of newspaper. When you say “Go,” they must crumple up the sheets of paper into “snowballs” and toss them to the other side. The object of the game is to keep the least amount of snowballs on your side. The team with the least amount of snowballs on their side after two minutes wins the game. Alternatively, use white polystyrene foam balls instead of newspaper.
