What Are Some Sites for Teens to Make New Friends & Meet New People?

If your teen is having a hard time meeting friends at school or at other social functions, one solution would be to attempt to make friends on the Internet. There are a number of services that can let teens and other people communicate with one another and meet friends online that have the potential to become friends in real life, as well.

  1. Facebook

    • The online social network Facebook allows teens to create a profile of their interests, activities, and pictures and place it online. Teens can also input exactly what school they go for and then click the link on their own profile page to see the profiles of people who also go to that school, allowing them to then directly communicate with those people.

    MySpace

    • MySpace is an online social network similar in concept to Facebook. Teens will set up and create their own profile page, allowing them to clearly display the types of activities the enjoy and the types of things they are interested in. If they have friends who are also on MySpace, teens can see the profiles of people who are virtual friends with their friends, allowing them to extend their own real-life social network outside of its normal boundaries.

    Twitter

    • Twitter is an online social-networking site that allows you to post your thoughts in 140-character bursts. Twitter only allows you to create a basic profile (asking you to specify only your name, location, and a short paragraph of information about yourself), so it is really better for meeting new people online rather than meeting people online who you will then meet in public. Teens can post about their interests, and other Twitter users can then respond to those posts.

    Warnings

    • When you begin putting information about yourself online, be sure never to give too much identifying information. Never post your personal address or even your telephone number online, or anything that could give someone too much information about yourself. Also, proceed with extreme caution when meeting someone in real life that you first met on a social-networking site.
