"Dora the Explorer," a cartoon that first appeared in 1999 on Nick Jr., is about a young girl who is constantly checking out new places, learning new things and helping others. Nick Jr. carried her popularity into video games. While some are for the mainstream game consoles, the Nick Jr. website carries short, easy games for children as young as 4. While most are free, the ones marked "premium" carry a cost.
The Nick Jr. website had 63 "Dora" games in January of 2011. Most of them teach some kind of lesson. "Dora's Great Big World" updates every month with a new place Dora will explore. The "First Day at School" game challenges children to use math and verbal skills to lead the cartoon character to class. Kids work on color identification to get through the levels of the "Swiper's Big Adventure" game, a premium download. "Dora's Lost and Found," another premium download, helps children use logic skills to find lost items. Kids work on patterns and colors while riding with Santa in "Dora's Christmas Carol Adventure." "Dora's Carnival Adventure," a premium download, includes 10 different carnival games with cute rewards for those who do well at them.
