Ideas for Favors for an 18th Birthday

Turning 18 is a big deal for many teenagers. Once they hit 18, they can vote in the United States and have the freedom to make their own choices. An 18th birthday can also be a time of looking back and remembering for many teenagers, as they will soon graduate high school and move on to college. Pick favors that celebrate your teenager's new-found maturity while remembering the past.

Scratch-Off Lottery Tickets

  • At the age of 18, teenagers can begin to buy lottery tickets in many states. A person has to be 21 in Iowa, though. Have the birthday teenager buy enough $1 scratch-off tickets to give to party guests. It's a cute way for a teenager to mark the big event while her friends get the chance to win a few dollars. Even if the guest doesn't strike it rich from the ticket, it's still a small memento that she can remember her friend's birthday party with.

University Themed Favors

  • Many 18-year-olds are getting ready to head off to college. Depending on when the teenager's birthday falls, he may already know which school he's attending. If that is the case, distribute trinkets, such as pens, pencils or key chains, with the name of the teenager's new school on them to guests. If the teenager hasn't selected his school yet or is still waiting to hear back from colleges, distribute favors from a number of colleges to the guests.

Through the Years Picture Frame

  • Find a picture of the birthday teenager and each guest together from when they were younger or first met. Purchase small picture frames with room for two photos. Put the younger picture in one photo slot. Get a photo of each guest with the birthday teenager at the party. If you have a photo printer, print out the pictures so that you can put them in the second photo slot of each frame before the end of the party. Otherwise, give the second picture to the guests sometime after the party. Have the 18-year-old write a note on the back of the frame summing up the friendship.

Personalized Candy or Cookies

  • Teenagers tend to love sweet treats. Prepare cookie dough that you roll out, then use fun cookie cutters, such as hearts, flowers or a character your teenager is into, to cut the dough. Bake the cookies, then frost and decorate when cooled. Write something along the lines of "Happy 18th Birthday!" on the cookies or the teenager's birth date. You can also order candies with "Happy 18th Birthday" or another slogan printed on them for party favors. Wrap the cookies or candy in colored cellophane and tie with a ribbon.
