Army Obstacle Course Ideas for a Birthday

Army-themed birthday parties are very popular with some children. If you plan to throw one of your own, an obstacle course is a must-have. When designing your obstacle course, think of what you can include that will challenge the children and slow down the length of time it takes them to run through it.

Hula Hoops

  • Tie eight or more hula hoops together in two rows, with one row being slightly higher than the other. This will resemble the tire run utilized during Army training lessons. Each child must run through the hula hoops as fast as he can, making sure to step in each one.

  • Lay a tall ladder on the grass and have the children step in each rung while running across it as fast as possible. This is similar to the hula hoop course, yet it is more difficult because there is less space for the feet, requiring more accurate body movements.

  • Hang a thick rope firmly on a tree and place a kiddie pool filled with water directly underneath it. When the children reach this section of the obstacle course, they will need to hold onto the rope and swing over the pool without getting wet or falling off.

  • If you have large boxes, or if you can obtain some, cut off the tops and bottoms of several boxes and tape them together. You can then paint them green or give them a camouflage design. The tunnels should be large enough that children won't get stuck, but short enough that they will need to crawl through.

  • Place several water-filled buckets in a zigzag motion and have the children weave in and out of them. If you don't have enough buckets you can use sand-filled boxes or flower pots, or anything else large enough to be seen and heavy enough to stay put.

Chin-Up Bar

  • If you have a chin-up bar, place it somewhere within the obstacle course and have children do a specified number of chin ups. If you don't have one, you can designate an area where children must stop and do a specific number of jumping jacks, sit ups or any other type of exercise.
