What Kind of Dog Is a Good Small House Dog?
The ideal dog for a small house should be comfortable in the home's more restricted living space, so it usually is a small animal that needs less exercise and doesn't miss being outdoors. Small dogs also defecate less than large ones, which is important if you expect your pet to use an indoor litter box. And if you don't like constantly sweeping up dog hair, go for breeds that shed less.

Chihuahuas
-
Chihuahuas can act bigger than they are. Chihuahuas can be only 6 inches tall and weigh as little as 2 pounds, but they have big dog territorial attitudes that get them in trouble with other dogs outside the house. They can snap at children but make loyal companions for couples or a single person. They shed moderate amounts of hair.
Yorkshire Terriers
-
Yorkies can be protective. Originally bred to hunt rats and other rodents, Yorkies are adaptable pets that get enough exercise tugging on a towel or fetching a toy. They tend to be fiercely protective of their owners and for that reason they are not good pets around small children.

Poodles
-
Poodles are one of the smarter breeds. The smaller miniature and toy poodle breeds make good stay-at-home pets. Poodles don't shed much hair and produce extremely small amounts of the dander to which some people are allergic. They are intelligent and easily trained. They do not require extensive exercise.
Dachshunds
-
Dachsunds are popular pets. Dachshunds are playful, high-energy dogs that need medium amounts of exercise and play but adjust well to life indoors. They snap at people when excited, so they are not good for homes with small children. They shed a medium amount and they are difficult to housebreak. Known for their forceful bark, they make good watchdogs.
Bichon Frise
-
Bichon Frise dogs need to spend time with their owners. Bichon frise dogs get along well with children and other pets. They enjoy short walks and are happy indoors. The most important part of their day is the time spent with their owners. This isn't a dog you leave alone all day. This dog is hard to housebreak but easy to train. They shed little hair or dander.
