Although it's in the shadow of the San Francisco school system, the Oakland Unified School District serves many students in the East Bay area. Although the average salary for teachers in the district is above the statewide salary for the profession, their earning power may be reduced when adjusted to actual dollars, because of the relatively high cost of living in the city.

The average salary for elementary school teachers in the Oakland area, which includes Hayward and Fremont, is $61,330 as of May 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Middle school teachers' median salary is $58,610, while high school teachers' median annual salary is $64,680. Half of all teachers regardless of the level at which they teach earn between $47,710 and $78,860.

The Oakland Unified School District's salary table compensates teachers based on two factors---their tenure in the district and the amount of postsecondary education they complete. Teachers with 30 semester hours of credit beyond their master's degree receive a pay increase relative to base pay, with an increase for every 15 additional credit hours following that, up to 90. The annual salary for a first-year teacher with minimum credentials is $39,456.20, as of 2008, while a teacher with 26 years' experience and 90 credits beyond a bachelor's degree earns $70,933.93 per year. A teacher with 10 years of experience and a bachelor's degree earns $51,317.53 per year.
